Barbara Antonsen Memorial Park
The design of the Barbara Antonsen Memorial Park Amphitheatre, a new outdoor performance venue surrounded by the unique red sandstone formations of Sedona, Arizona, creates a place for the community to gather and experience the magnificient beauty of the natural landscape, while enjoying a variety of entertainment ranging from musical performances, dance troupes and children’s theater to movies in the park and weddings.
The project includes a performance area with outdoor, shaded seating for 200-300 patrons and support program: restrooms, dressing rooms, storage, equipment, infrastructure and site/landscape design. A canopy reaches over a portion of lawn seating to support a “latilla” or shade structure of small oxidized steel piping to supplement shade of carefully placed trees, while blending into the surrounding mountain colors. Inspired by the Ball Court at the Wupatki National Monument, the design concept for the covered outdoor performance venue takes its cue from the history of Sedona itself and is based on the experience of three simple elements: the red earth, surrounding views of the spectacular red sandstone cliffs, and the deep blue sky overhead. The design choreographs the visitor experience from arrival to a red entry plaza to descent along a nature pathway to the amphitheater itself.
