In partnership with Xanterra Parks & Resorts, Loven Contracting replaced the Grand Canyon National Park’s El Tovar Hotel’s roof. One of the oldest and most iconic hotels, El Tovar Hotel opened in 1905 and was constructed to accommodate increasing numbers of train passengers arriving aboard the Grand Canyon Railway. Due to the hotel’s placement on the National Register of Historic Places and its status as a National Historic Landmark, any work on the facility requires strict adherence to both the National Park Service and SHPO historic renovation, preservation, and rehabilitation guidelines.
The roof replacement process included installing over 45,000SF of cedar shake shingles that would match the original’s profile and finishes. Our years of experience working in and around active Grand Canyon National Park job sites enabled our team to work efficiently while ensuring the safety and quality of experience of visitors, staff, residents, and wildlife. To limit the impact of construction on the visiting public, extensive environmental control management and comprehensive safety measures were implemented throughout all project phases.

High water events in the autumn of 2013 caused significant damage to the Rainbow Bridge Trail in Rainbow Bridge National Monument – a remote National Park Service site accessible only via footpath or by boat.
Repair and reconstruction of the trail required barge transport of all equipment, materials, and personnel from Page, Arizona, to the job site. To reduce transportation costs and job duration, the crew was supplied with houseboat housing, enabling them to maintain a continuous work schedule.
The trail repair and improvement process included trenching and excavating for a new gabion trail support structure and installing the gabion. To address additional erosion caused by an overhead waterfall feature during flash flood events, Loven Contracting designed and constructed a concrete pad in the water flow’s impact zone. Upon construction completion, the crew removed the temporary trail reroute and the equipment access road. Our crew conducted all site clean-up and restoration activities per National Park Service standards.

First designed by Richard Neutra and constructed in 1963, The Petrified Forest National Park’s facilities required more efficient and renewable energy systems. Loven Contracting collaborated with the National Park Service to support this transition; the scope of construction services included installing a new solar water heater and associated heat exchanger in the Apartment Wing, replacing the existing HVAC system with a PV system, upgrading the main power feed from the transformer, service entrance, and main panel at the School Building, and constructing a shade structure with a photovoltaic array.
Additional features include more efficient AC models with audio and video capabilities and a roof-mounted PV system tied to the existing power system in the Community Building. With the installation of several systems to maximize energy usage and promote cost efficiency, the Petrified Forest National Park has made a smooth transition towards using more energy-efficient systems.
