NPS SCIENCE & RESOURCE MANAGEMENT BUILDING

Location

Grand Canyon National Park, AZ

This project earned 19 out of 19 LEED points in the LEED Optimized Energy Performance category and was recognized for its exemplary regional design response to local Arizona conditions. This project also earned a Sustainable Building Award from Coconino County.

The Science and Resource Management Building at Grand Canyon National Park, AZ, is an award-winning Design-Build, USGBC LEED-Platinum certified, and federally-funded project. The SRM Building was built in collaboration with Flagstaff-based Civil Design & Engineering (CDE).

CDE and Loven Contracting worked together to design the two-story, 8,900SF building, focusing on sustainability and incorporating the surrounding park’s architectural styles. Our construction services on the Science and Resource Building included office spaces, conference rooms, laboratories, a gray water collection system, a rainwater collection system, solar panels, and LED lighting throughout. The end-product is an environmentally friendly facility that blends into the landscape of the Grand Canyon National Park.

Highlands Fire Station

HIGHLANDS FIRE STATION

Location

Flagstaff, Arizona

Loven Contracting worked with Highlands Fire District on the Design+Build delivery of a 4,000SF Fire Administration Building addition to the existing Fire Station and a 2,400SF Pre-Engineered Metal Building for the Bear Jaw Wildfire Hand Crew.

Construction took place during a heavy monsoon season, requiring 8-foot over-excavation, fill, and compaction to prepare the site. During construction, our team identified a leak in the fire loop and drainage challenges that were causing failure of the surrounding pavement. Loven Contracting mitigated these issues via a 3’ over-excavation and substrate rebuild to support heavy vehicle traffic. Completing this concurrently with the original scope of work enabled our client to achieve meaningful savings and completed the project on schedule.

WILLIAM LOWELL PUTNAM COLLECTION CENTER AND LIBRARY

Location

Flagstaff, Arizona

The William Lowell Putnam Collection Center and Library located in Flagstaff, Arizona is a new addition to Lowell Observatory’s educational facilities. The Putnam Collection Center and Library serves as a resource center for historian studies and includes a research library, processing room, staff offices, and a collections repository that houses historic photographs, photographic glass plates, an array of antique instruments, artifacts, and an archive of historic papers from across Northern Arizona.

Construction on the library was conducted through both the summer monsoon season and winter months in an environmentally sensitive area surrounded by a dense forest, slopes, and substantial amounts of basalt bedrock. Despite these environmental challenges, the Loven Contracting team delivered construction services on time and without disrupting Lowell’s active observatory campus.

With the Steele Visitor Center, Hendricks Center for Planetary Studies, metal and fabrication shop, and smaller historic observatories located directly adjacent to the new facility, construction was scheduled so that all nearby facilities remained in full operation throughout the duration of the project. Because necessary rock blasting took place adjacent to historic telescope enclosures, buildings, and sensitive equipment, seismic monitors were utilized to verify resulting vibration activity. Blasting was precisely scheduled to avoid disruption to Observatory visitors and surrounding public areas.

Other aspects of the construction job on the collection center and library included:

  • A hydronic in-floor heating system was integrated into the temperature and humidity controlled archival center.
  • Motorized solar tubes that control lighting and UV in sensitive areas were installed.
  • A special walk-in freezer utilized to kill bacteria and insects at temperatures of -20° prior to archiving materials was installed.
  • Loven Contracting designed a glycol snowmelt system under a loading dock area with permeable pavers. This system required installation over 2” of rigid foam insulation, yet still had to have the compressive strength to support delivery trucks and general traffic.

Rainbow Bridge National Monument

RAINBOW BRIDGE NATIONAL MONUMENT

Location

Lake Powell, UT

High water events in the autumn of 2013 caused significant damage to the Rainbow Bridge Trail in Rainbow Bridge National Monument – a remote National Park Service site accessible only via footpath or by boat.

Repair and reconstruction of the trail required barge transport of all equipment, materials, and personnel from Page, Arizona, to the job site. To reduce transportation costs and job duration, the crew was supplied with houseboat housing, enabling them to maintain a continuous work schedule.

The trail repair and improvement process included trenching and excavating for a new gabion trail support structure and installing the gabion. To address additional erosion caused by an overhead waterfall feature during flash flood events, Loven Contracting designed and constructed a concrete pad in the water flow’s impact zone. Upon construction completion, the crew removed the temporary trail reroute and the equipment access road. Our crew conducted all site clean-up and restoration activities per National Park Service standards.

PETRIFIED FOREST NATIONAL PARK

Location

Petrified Forest National Park, AZ

First designed by Richard Neutra and constructed in 1963, The Petrified Forest National Park’s facilities required more efficient and renewable energy systems. Loven Contracting collaborated with the National Park Service to support this transition; the scope of construction services included installing a new solar water heater and associated heat exchanger in the Apartment Wing, replacing the existing HVAC system with a PV system, upgrading the main power feed from the transformer, service entrance, and main panel at the School Building, and constructing a shade structure with a photovoltaic array.

Additional features include more efficient AC models with audio and video capabilities and a roof-mounted PV system tied to the existing power system in the Community Building. With the installation of several systems to maximize energy usage and promote cost efficiency, the Petrified Forest National Park has made a smooth transition towards using more energy-efficient systems.
